Replace your Screen Doors

“The Complete Screens retractable screen doors is definitely a brand I will recommend to everyone in my neighborhood! The Retractable has given us the view of our beautiful back yard and the breathtaking ocean view by putting the Screens on our sets of double french doors, we are now able to open and close our retractable doors without them in- swinging and taking up so much of our needed space for furniture. I find them so much more attractive than the regular screen doors, for they often can be gaudy and even cut off half of the view. I can barely see my screen doors when they are open or closed. My window screens look great also. Thank you for brightening up my living and dinning rooms with vibrant sunshine and gentle, cool breezes. I am thrilled!” John F. Hidden Hills, CA.

Stainless Steel Screen Doors

Stainless Steel Screen Doors

Stainless Steel bottom rollers, nuts and bolts, top spring loaded rollers and screws, handle hardware and screws for sliding screen doors. Beach and coastal homes receive a lot of salt air exposure

When it comes to versatile metals, stainless steel is certainly a top contender. Durable, clean, highly recyclable and visually pleasing, this metal also earns points for being extremely resistant to corrosion.
Unfortunately, all superheroes have their weaknesses.

While your stainless steel will put up a good fight against salt air, it’s going to need a trusty sidekick to fully take down the sea breeze that looms over our coastal climate, so every 3-4 month wipe the bottom track and top channels and then apply wd40.

How Stainless Steel Resists Corrosion

Stainless steel gets its corrosion resistant ability from chromium, and it contains at least 10.5 percent of it. Chromium is a lustrous and steely gray metal known for being tarnish resistant. You are probably familiar with chromium if you own anything that is chrome-plated, which just means it has been coated with chromium.

Whereas the iron in carbon steel reacts with the oxygen in the atmosphere to produce rust, the chromium in stainless steel reacts with oxygen to form a thin but strong passive layer on the metal’s surface. The more passive a material is, the less it is affected by environmental factors. The addition of nickel and molybdenum also contribute to stainless steel’s passivity.

How Sea Breeze Hurts Stainless Steel

In coastal areas, the chloride in sea spray, rain and dry salt particles that the wind carries can contribute to the corrosion of stainless steel. Areas within 5 miles of salt water are generally considered at risk of salt-related corrosion, but that distance varies with location and weather patterns.

In a perfect world, stainless steel would not corrode at all. But, when the environment overwhelms the metal’s passive layer with something like salt, it begins to break down. Stainless steel corrodes in two main forms. Pitting appears in the form of dark brown pits in the steel’s surface. You might also see a form of corrosion that creates a large crevice in the steel’s surface. Neither of these forms of corrosion affects stainless steel’s mechanical properties, but they are unattractive.

How You Can Help

A high-quality protective coating is the best way to help your stainless steel fight the sea breeze. Before applying a coating, sand away any rust that has built up on the metal with a very fine grit sandpaper. Wipe the surface clean with a wet cloth. Use a mild detergent or white vinegar if you wish.

Coatings come in a few different forms, including clear coats and paints. You can apply them in a variety of ways, including with a spray can, spray gun, brush, or roller. Follow the instructions on the product for proper application and drying time.

Screen Doors North Hollywood

Screen Doors North Hollywood

There are a lot of homes in North Hollywood that still have roll formed screen doors, a very lightweight aluminum sheet rolled into a frame. These doors have small plastic nylon 1-1/4 inch wheels held up with small weak tension springs  with, flimsy black plastic handles with a tiny white latch that breaks off after a few month of usage and the frame always bend or crack right where the handle is. Extruded aluminum is much thicker in gauge never bend or cracks and will last a lifetime. They are also able to put on a better paint coating on extruded aluminum which won’t fade over the years.

The roll form tooling is more cost-effective where volumes are high like Home Depot and Lowe’s, one size fits all and never a perfect fit. Extruded aluminum screen doors and window screens, because it has more material, will have an advantage when considering the comparative strength vs. a roll formed aluminum frame and can only be built and fabricated on-site for a perfect fit and it comes with a lifetime guarantee.
